2007 Action Mesothelioma Day with Debbie Brewer

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization sends our support to the British Lung Foundation, and the many other asbestos victim organizations, for Action Mesothelioma Day (AMD), taking place Friday, July 6th. Action Mesothelioma Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness, supporting patients, and remembering those who have been affected by mesothelioma. This year the event will focus on a global ban of asbestos.

Asbestos, a proven human carcinogen, is a global problem that requires worldwide advocacy to prevent and cure environmental and occupational asbestos-caused diseases. Tragically, Great Britain has one of the highest per capita rates of mesothelioma in the world, which claims more than 2,500 lives in the country every year. It is difficult to understand why the United States has not banned asbestos, and worse yet, continues to import asbestos across our borders.

Debbie Brewer will be passionately speaking at the Hampshire Asbestos Support & Awareness Group (HASAG) meeting in Portsmouth, England on Friday. “I have supported Action Mesothelioma Day since February 2007,” said Debbie, organizer of the Mesothelioma Warriors, “I was diagnosed with mesothelioma in November 2006, and since then I have been an avid supporter of many groups, especially ADAO. I would like to see a complete ban on asbestos. I would like to think a worldwide ban on asbestos in my lifetime is possible. It is time for change.” Laurie Kazan–Allen, founder of The International Ban Asbestos Secretariat (IBAS), has written a great article, “The Female Face of Britain’s Asbestos Catastrophe,” which includes a story on Debbie Brewer.

ADAO hopes everyone will join the British Lung Foundation in recognizing this important day that honors and remembers our courageous Mesothelioma Warriors. Presently, the only two ways to eliminate environmental and occupational asbestos-caused disease are prevention and cure.

Read a press release from the National Asbestos Helpline, which was joined its voice with the thousands of others calling for a complete and total ban on asbestos. The press release is full of interesting information about Action Mesothelioma Day and includes a  link to a petition, also available here, so you too can sign and make your voice heard.
