ADAO was honored to have so many amazing individuals come together at the 8^th Asbestos Awareness Conference to discuss the impact of asbestos on public health, the environment, and the economy. We are excited to be able to share the inspiring and exceptional presenters, honorees, and discussion panels with our supportive community. João Carlos Duarte Paes, president of ABIFibro, a Brazilian company that produces safe alternative fibers for fibrocement, presented “Leading by Example – Asbestos Free Cement” at the conference. Paes’s presentation was both enlightening and progressive, and ADAO completely supports the use of alternative materials in products that would otherwise contain asbestos.

Paes was previously Director of Asbestos Mining, from 1972 to 1992, having worked with the Brazilian Government to approve the ILO/162 Convention, and as an observer at UNO, in the preparation of the agenda for Rio 92. He is currently the President of the ABIFibro, having been elected to the position in 1996. In 1999, facing the strong evidence of harm caused by asbestos exposure, Paes supported the prohibition of asbestos use in Brazil, counting on technology and safe alternative fibers in the production of fibrocement, this being the target of ABIFibro.
