While in Brazil, ADAO toured two factories that produce alternative materials for asbestos asbestos. Being a part of the United Nations’ Rio+ 20 Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro and attending additional meetings throughout Brazil have been eye-opening, and the factories ADAO saw are just two examples of the fact that alternative materials do exist.

We hope that others around the world follow the lead of Brazilian plants we have toured and begin to explore and use alternative materials for asbestos. Asbestos is a global problem, and it is great to see Brazil developing innovative and progressive solutions to the problem of asbestos production and use.

ADAO has had the opportunity to engage with the international governmental and NGO community to help raise awareness of asbestos-disease prevention, which includes highlighting the possibility of asbestos substitutes. Sustainable development – the topic of the UN conference – includes a healthy, asbestos-free environment and workplace. Like some companies in Brazil, the United States and other countries can also move away from the use of asbestos and replace it with modern developments.

You can learn more about ADAO’s work in Brazil on our new Brazil landing page, view the PowerPoint presentation, “Harnessing the Power of Social Media Advocacy “at the UN People’s Summit Workshop: “The Future We Want is Free of Asbestos” and our blog about participating at the UN Rio + Social conference.

In unity,

Linda
