Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) Announces Honorees at Seventh Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference 

Recognition to be given at the 2011 event for outstanding work and dedication to the cause of asbestos awareness

Redondo Beach, CA … January 18, 2011 — The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) today announced its honorees for the seventh Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference, which will be held in Atlanta, GA, April 1 -3, 2011. The conference brings together renowned doctors, scientists, researchers and most importantly, asbestos victims and their families, in a united forum to enhance asbestos awareness, education, treatment, and collaboration.  The conference is made possible with the support and collaborative efforts of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute

Each year, the conference recognizes outstanding individuals, as well as organizations, from around the world who continue to serve as a voice for asbestos victims, raising awareness and advocating for a worldwide ban of asbestos. 

The 2011 Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Honorees are:  

U.S. Senator Max Baucus will be presented with the Tribute of Hope Award for his steadfast commitment and determination to ban asbestos. 

Environmental Information Association will receive the Tribute of Unity Award for its committed work to increase asbestos awareness in efforts to prevent exposure and disease.   

Guadalupe Aguilar Madrid, M.D., MSc, Ph.D., will be recognized with the Dr. Irving Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her dedicated research into the social and medical impact asbestos has had on humankind in Mexico and around the world. 

Sugio Furuya will be presented with the Tribute of Inspiration Award for being a bridge of hope and strength to victims of asbestos exposure in Asia and across the globe.  

Julie Gundlach, a mesothelioma patient, will be recognized with The Alan Reinstein Award for her commitment to education, advocacy, and support to countless patients and families. 

“As we get even closer to a full asbestos ban, we are encouraged, yet simultaneously reminded, that the reverberations of asbestos exposure can last for decades,” stated Linda Reinstein, President/CEO and Co-Founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. “Our annual conferences drive home the importance of the need for increased awareness, education, and community support. We are again honored to have the opportunity to bring together some of the world’s most renowned experts while recognizing some of the most influential leaders in the battle against asbestos exposure. They are true asbestos awareness heroes and prove that together, change is possible.” 

ADAO’s mission is to provide the most advanced medical, occupational, and environmental information available about asbestos-related diseases to individuals throughout the world.
