Press Release: ADAO Launches 19th Annual “Global Asbestos Awareness Week” April 1-7, 2023

Posted on March 31, 2023

Each year, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) dedicates April 1-7 to increasing awareness of asbestos and preventing exposure by bringing together experts and victims from around the world to share, learn, and take action. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen, and there is no safe level of exposure. While promising research continues, prevention remains the only cure.

Leadership Quote: “Asbestos is the biggest cause of occupational cancer, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives a year worldwide. It remains a global challenge to both occupational and public health and must be addressed through improved public policy and occupational safety and health (OSH) management.Ruth Wilkinson, Head of Policy at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

ADAO is excited to highlight new resources from today’s featured Partner for Prevention, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH):

Take action now to ban asbestos imports and use with no loopholes or exemptions! Send your #BanAsbestos letter to Congress in just 60 seconds and add your voice to the U.S. and international coalition fighting against this deadly fiber. Protect the health of workers, families, and communities  — urge Congress take immediate action. Send your letter today!

ADAO’s small but mighty team has created a network of tens of thousands, and we’re leading the charge for legislative change regarding asbestos imports and use. One thing that makes this all possible is the power of collaboration.

We are grateful to collaborate with our international partners: Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). Like ADAO — our partners are dedicated to raising awareness about workers’ safety, health, and rights, and we are honored to work together this week!

Other longtime partners in advocacy include the AFL-CIO; the American Public Health Association (APHA); Environmental Information Association (EIA); the Global Ban Asbestos Network (GBAN); International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); Less Cancer; Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families; United States Public Interest Research Groups (PIRG); Toxic-Free Future; and internationally, Associação Brasileira dos Expostos ao Amianto (ABREA).

Special thanks to our 2023 Platinum Sponsor Simmons Hanly Conroy.

Together, we make change happen.
