The International Agency for Research on Cancer 40 years ago declared asbestos a human carcinogen, yet the United States is the only industrial nation in the world not to ban asbestos. Although annual asbestos consumption in the U.S. has been decreasing every year since the 1970s, there are still approximately 125 million people in the world who are exposed to asbestos in the workplace, with more than 107,000 people dying each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis resulting from occupational exposures.
